[TonyMoly] - Tomatox Massage Pack

TonyMoly Tomatox Massage Pack

This is the second product that was in my pink box from BitsAndBobsofBeauty to review! Launched in 2009 this is a well-known skincare staple in the TonyMoly line. There are many reviews already out there but below is my two cents on this wash off pack.

Brand Statement:
“It vitalises your skin with fresh tomato extract and natural ingredients. It delivers massaging and skin clearing mask effect. It is a multifunctional product providing triple effect. Massage, Pack and Whitening, with fresh tomato extract and pure pearl powder.”

Ingredients:
Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Water, Glycerin, Sorbitol, Titanium Dioxide, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Butylene Glycol, Alcohol, Nicinamide, PVP, Squalane, Polysorbate 60, Pearl Powder, Coral Powder, Ascorbl Tetraisopalmitate, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Solanum Lycopersium (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Saururus Chinensis Extract, Panthenol, Methylparaben, Carbomer, Arginine, Aluminum Hydroxide, Fragrance, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Propylparaben, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Mannitol, Sucrose, Tocopheryl Acetate

Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Water: So this is the key ingredient and selling point of the product. It's Tomato extract and a known anti-oxidant. However be warned this can also be a potential skin irritant.

Glycerin: This is a humectant which is great for helping skin retain moisture. It attracts moisture to itself and locks in moisture.

Titanium Dioxide: Now this is a shifty character in the ingredient line up. This is commonly found in suncreams and is what results in that white sheen you get on your skin. Potentially this is what leads people to rave reviews on the whitening aspect of the massage pack. Rather deceptive in my opinion.

Packaging:
Look at it! It’s adorable *.* Well in as far as a tomato can be adorable. It’s a lightweight package and twists open to reveal the product which is sealed with another lid. It comes with a spatula which is useful for keeping things hygienic. The downside of this adorable packaging though is that it can be difficult to store in small homes. Hard to stack other things on a tomato!

Product & Scent:
It’s quite a thick cream and you will resemble a ghost once you’ve put it on! Has a soft creamy texture, you can keep it in the fridge for an extra cooling effect. Has a fresh scent to it with an undertone of cream. This fresh scent does linger on the skin after washing off, but I quite like it.

Directions of Use:
You massage onto your face for 1-2 minutes and leave on for 5-10 minutes before washing off. I wash this off with a balm/oil cleanser, as I do with a lot of wash off masks, as I want to ensure that all the product has been rinsed and won’t be clogging my pores. Throwing side-eye at the suggestion you don’t wash off with a cleanser.

Before Use
During Use
Chubby hands alert! After using. You can see that the skin looks slightly brighter and it felt softer.
The redness is from where I rubbed the mask off, and is only temporary.

Review:
If you have sensitive skin be careful of using this product. There are many reports on the web from other bloggers who’ve felt their skin tingling/burning when they first applied it.
Fortunately for me I didn’t experience this, but I’d highly recommend patch testing as always before you go full blast with it. This didn’t dry out into a hardened state, which I liked as it meant I felt comfortable for the ten minutes it was on. Once I washed it off I could see that my skin tone had brightened and evened out. It wasn’t a magic transformation but the effects were evident without a magnifying glass! My skin felt soft and smooth leaving me happy with the results.
By the next morning the results weren’t there anymore, so I’d recommend doing this in the morning or before a night out to get the full effects from it.
Me with the mask on. Please ignore the frizzy hair! It had been a long day at work.

Pros:
+ Hydration
+ Brightens
+ Adorable Packaging
+ Softens Skin
+ Budget Buy
Cons:
- Temporary Effects
- Not Good for Sensitive Skin
- Awkward Storage Capabilities
Rating:
3/5

Rating System:
1/5 = Should be taken off the market \and the product designer sent to the corner
2/5 = Does not live up to it's claims and would not buy or recommend
3/5 = Decent product, no miracle worker but a closet placeholder until a better one is found
4/5 = Now we're talking! Lives up to it's claim and would buy again
5/5 = We have a Holy Grail people. This is not a drill. Will buy till the end of time

Final Thoughts:
I had fun while using this product and it will continue to be used once a week as part of my regular routine until it's used up. However I wouldn’t go out and buy it for myself. The effects were good but not magic. I found it was better at hydration rather than the brightening aspect of it. I’ve also tried other wash off packs which I just preferred in terms of results, like my favourite Baviphat Strawberry Mask and Lush’s Mask of Magnesium. I’ve not got the time to have an average wash off mask in my routine!
